Quail Look-out

Quail in the Snow

It’s New Years Day 2013 and the Quail were putting on a show for us.  The Quail look plump in the winter when they fluff out their feathers. Apparently birds increase the size of air pockets between the feathers which acts as insulation against the cold.  This quail was perched at the top of the Mountain Ash tree while the others in the group fed below. Often one senior Quail acts as a lookout while others feed. This cooperative arrangement helps keep the entire group safer from predators.
